Matthew 22:37-39 (New International Version)
37Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'
There is no room for selfishness here.
First (and greatest) commandment:
* Love God with ALL your heart and ALL your soul and ALL your mind.
* Our tendency is to love ourselves with ALL our heart and ALL our soul and ALL our mind.
Second commandment:
* The second "is like" the first.
* Love your neighbor as yourself - this sweeps away any remnant of selfishness - give love you would naturally give yourself away - first to God, second to others - doesn't say a word about giving love to yourself.
How selfish would I be if I made all of my relationships / friendships / acquaintances about me?
LORD, please help me to fight this.
